Five-Disc boxed set features all previously unreleased live performances of Ol' Blue Eyes in 'The Apple'. Collection highlights performances recorded between 1955 and 1990 at iconic New York City venues. Frank Sinatra may have been born in Hoboken, New Jersey, but the Chairman of the Board always held a special place in his heart for the city that never sleeps-'The Apple,' as he called it. From a surprise appearance with Tommy Dorsey in 1955 to a 1990 concert at Radio City Music Hall, SINATRA: NEW YORK follows the singer onstage at various iconic New York City venues, living out one of his most famous lines: 'If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere.' The 71 previously unreleased performances gathered here (55 on CD/16 on DVD) capture the singer giving his electricifying best, reminding listeners why Sinatra' s celebrated baritone has been hailed as 'The Voice.' The set, produced by Charles Pignone, features deluxe packaging with rare, never-before-seen photos, tributes from Martin Scorsese, Tony Bennett, Yogi Berra, and Twyla Tharp, liner notes by Nat Hentoff, and essays by William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist and The French Connection; George Kalinsky, official photographer for Madison Square Garden for over 40 years; Tom Young, engineer for Sinatra; Joe & Sal Scognamillo, owners of Patsy's Italian Restaurant in New York City; and Frank Sinatra Jr.

Disappointed
It's hard to give anything Sinatra a mere 3 stars but as compared to the Vegas Box set, this one pails...I surprisingly found myself disappointed with this box set as compared to the other Sinatra box set(s). This DVD's video quality almost has a bootleg feel to it and would be comparable to VHS quality although some of the close ups are more acceptable. The production is fine, although the angles are often from behind or to the side vs. front and/or whole stage angles. The sound is good but the video quality is not as good as some in the DVD Concert Collection box set, for example - FYI, some of those aren't so good...Maybe this is another "film" that was hard to restore? IMO, The Sinatra Vegas box set is superior in all regards. It's DVD has VERY good video quality, considering..., and it's also "a more fun" show plus the cds are better - also "more fun". As a whole, The New York set comes off as more serious and "symphonic or orchestral"...I prefer the fun/loose stuff. I was hoping that this NY set would merely be a NY version of the Vegas set, but the only similarity is the packaging. I'm glad I have this as it satisfies my curiosity about it and also finishes(?) off my collection of offically released Sinatra DVD's & live CD stuff(I think...). I don't think I'll re listen or watch this one as much some of the others...My suggestion is to buy this one only after buying the other two Sinatra DVD's and/or CD/DVD sets - The Vegas Box set (great) and the Sinatra Concert Collection (very good). My guess is that only NY natives would prefer this set. Do understand that none of the Sinatra DVDs are perfect HD quality, but some are "clearly" better than others. True fans can put up with minor video quality issues that otherwise you'd normally not. None of these live Cds(from NY or Vegas sets) are as bad or even as close to being as bad, sound wise, as the live Sinatra album from Australia w/ Red Norvo. Again, true fans can deal w/, look past & appreciate. Just my 2 cents.Attn Sinatra estate: Release more concert DVD's please!!!(and remaster them...) There are 100's 100's of Sinatra video bootlegs out there...

Great - but it could have been even better.....
This is another beautifully packaged Frank Sinatra box set, very much like the "Vegas" box. The performances are mostly great, but I have a serious gripe about the content. CDs 1 & 4 are great, but why are there two 1974 concerts in this box? 1974 was not a "very good year" for Sinatra live performances. He was much better, and the setlists were much better, in 1979, 1981 and beyond. In September 1981 Frank did an incredible 2 week stand at Carnegie Hall. Among the songs he performed at those shows were "As Time Goes By", "A Long Night", "These Foolish Things", "Thanks For The Memory", "When Joanna Loved Me", "Little Girl Blue", and "In the Still of the Night". Sadly, none of these great songs are on this box set....instead we get TWO 1974 versions of the wretched "Bad Bad Leroy Brown". On the plus side, the DVD of Carnegie Hall 1980 is great - although it is edited and incomplete. "Sinatra New York" is a mixed bag overall, but for Sinatra fanatics this set is a must !

About time
It took forever to receive it, but totally worth it. This is one of the best albums!! Took like two months to get to me, as it came from the U.K. I was starting to get disturbed!!!

Sinatra...GREAT!!!
Except for a tear in the box that contains all the cd's, the material itself is fabulous. It is a prime example of why there is only one Sinatra; why he was so dynamic throughout seven decades of performances. In his later years he did not have that golden silky voice he had in the 30's and 40's, or his richer perfect tone of the 50's, but he could still swing like nobody's business, like nobody else, and hold an audience in the palm of his hand better than anyone else and better than he ever did...which is saying a lot. If you want to listen to great songs the way they were meant to be sung this is for you.

Somewhat Disappointed
I consider Frank Sinatra the greatest pop male vocalist of my generation (Mel Torme is a close second). I bought this package because I had seen the video on TV and wanted to have it in my collection. Whereas most of the tunes recorded demonstrate a typical Sinatra, I was disappointed to find duplication of some songs, particularly now learning from another reviewer that other and perhaps better tracks were available. To me, the practice of repeating songs can only be described as the result of concern about income rather than the buyer's satisfaction. Finally, I wish to comment that I would have preferred to avoid some of Sinatra's personal (and derogatory) commentary--I, too, prefer his vocal qualities to his personality.

Sinatra New York
What can I say about SINATRA... It is very great art.I have nothing else to add... The best is yet to come...Returning from a journey in the United States (East Coast) with my wife, we greatly regretted that we were not able to see him at the Carnegy Hall (New York)If by chance someone took a or several photograph(s) of him, could it be possible to send them to us... Even with payment...Pierre BESSON17 rue du Pont David93600 - AULNAY SOUS BOISFRANCE

you can never go wrong with sinatra.
this set is awesome. i prefer this new york compilation better than the las vegas compilation. the songs here are classical and can never be found in sinatra's other series especially the concert done in carnegie hall. the dvd concert is in its complete version compared to the one they showed at the p.b.s. television special. you can never go wrong collecting this series. as always, sinatra gives his 100% performance level. highly recommended.
